Newcastle University CANDO Project

CANDO (Controlling Abnormal Network Dynamics using Optogenetics) is a world-class, multi-site, cross-disciplinary project to develop a cortical implant for optogenetic neural control of epileptic seizures. It involves a team of over 30 neuroscientists, engineers and clinicians based at Newcastle University, Imperial College London, University College London and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The project is funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

As part of the project's public engagement they are working with renowned artists Susan Aldworth and Andrew Carnie, as well as theatre group Operating Theatre to explore public attitudes towards epilepsy and neural implants.
